Face masks. Lots of people are wearing them these days. In school, at work, at the grocery
store and sometimes even outside. A large group of people wears them without hesitating
about the efficiency of the masks. But are they that efficient? Or is it all just a fable? Should
we wear face masks in all public places?
Lots of research has shown that face masks are only effective when you are in a building or
room with over 10.000 people and even then you only protect 10 people out of 10.000 for
the Corona-virus. If we only protect 0,001%, is it that useful? Besides, many people think
that when you wear face masks, the social distancing doesn't matter anymore, while that is
the most effective measure that has been taken against the Corona-virus.
Plus, what about the people that already have a hard time breathing? When it is hard to
breath without a mask, imagine how hard it is with a mask. And what about the deaf
people? They can’t hear and their way of communication is lip-reading. Because of the mask
they can’t communicate in proper ways anymore, because the medical mask, nor the
synthetic masks are transparent.
On the other hand, there is a solution for the lip-reading. There are transparent face
protectors and also other plastic face mask that cover the chin and the mouth. Some people
do still try to keep as much distance as they can to other people, so there is less of a chance
to get infected by Covid-19.
However this is still not enough of a reason to wear them everywhere. If they are not
effective, then why should we wear them? In high schools kids wear them in the hallways,
but when they are eating in breaks, they take them off, while sitting close to each other not
taking the social distancing in account. Why should we wear them, when plenty of
researches has shown us that they are just not effective.
