HSM 543 Health Services Finance Week 2 2022 . Week 2 – Thread 1 - Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (graded) On March 23, 2010, President Barack Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), a primary healthcare reform legislation of the 111th U.S. Congress. This new law brings about massive changes in the way that healthcare is delivered and funded in our nation. To say that PPACA is controversial is to utter a huge understatement. Many U.S. states and private organizations have filed suit in Federal Court challenging the constitutionality of the Act. Just about everyone is affected by this law. What are the major impacts of PPACA on hospitals? What are the major impacts on doctors? What are the major impacts on patients? In your own view, will PPACA improve healthcare in America? This section lists options that can be used to view responses. In which ways if at all have the new health care laws impacted you? Thanks, Craig Collapse Mark as Unread RE: Let's start with you Darla Ford Email this Author 7/11/2016 8:08:53 AM There have been a multitude of effects from PPACA; they are fraud, which was due to a lack of transparency, increased patient loads for physicians and doctors, thus creating a shortage of healthcare professionals, longer wait times, and limited access to care for some. PPACA will eventually improve the overall health care because this program is still in an infantile stage and requires tweaking at every level. Once the tweaking and bugs are worked out health care reform should become even stronger. Our family felt the impact in the increase of deductibles and in the beginning with delays in appointments, lab tests not ordered properly , too many hands in the pot, and also as VETS the VA was the worse at times (increased patient loads/ we now avoid going if we don’t have too!). Yes, over time I think we are moving in the right direction although there are still many issues to address. Class, consider the impact which the new health care laws have had on you and or those you know. Here is one interesting article on this topic, regards, Craig. Collapse Mark as Unread RE: Let's start with you Jennifer Boren Email this Author 7/12/2016 7:52:21 PM Modified:7/12/2016 7:53 PM Professor and class, My parents have had a terrible time meeting the requirements to have health insurance as required by the new health law. My father works as a temporary (contract) employee for a company and is unable to afford the premiums required by those who sign up for health insurance on their own. My parents looked into signing up for healthcare through the exchanged but determined the premiums and deductibles were more than what they could afford. My father only makes about 2,000 to 3,000 a month and can't afford to pay the extra money it takes for insurance. As two middle class almost retirees, it puts them between a rock and a hard place forcing them to try to work out cash discounts with healthcare providers they see through the year. As mentioned in the article I have posted below, the plans available to my parents tout a high deductible with a low premium but almost require a HSA to help with the costs before the high deductible is paid. Be they on a student/work visa, transitioning into residency, or a resident/citizen that works part time, they were only able to obtain better knowledge of their options for what healthcare insurance plan best suited them/their families from a, sometimes hard to find, studied representative, or via them calling for follow-ups a fair amount. Despite these efforts, better teaching/information distribution to society would improve our success in transitioning/advancing in our health services initiatives and potentially decreasing the avoidable occurrences of having to pay a penalty. This law affected me when i had to go to the ER and had two healthcare insurance cards, one from work and i had just applied for the obama care card too but when i presented both to the ER staff i had no idea that she used only one. I got a bill and that is when i noticed they had not used both. We lack enough guidance on what kinds of insurance that we are supposed to have. At various points i was told to apply and i got approved but in a month they stop the services giving you other reasons why you do not qualify. Luckily, i was able to get insurance through my workplace as i tried to educate myself more on what i should do. I had to weigh how often i use health care services and how much i would be paying in a month in order to choose what insurance to have.
