Social Media in Economic Development
Media is a form of communication through the internet in which people use to communicate and find
information others use it to expand their businesses. It consists of different channels where people
interact and share their thoughts. There are different types of social media used by different
communities, these include Facebook, twitter, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, telegram, snap
chat just to name a few. For now, we will focus on Whatsapp in economic development.
Whatsapp was founded by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, former employees of Yahoo!. It was initially not
intended to be used as a messaging app.
Whatsapp Messenger, or simply Whatsapp, is an internationally available freeware, cross-platform
centralized instant messaging (IM) and voice-over-IP (VoIP) service owned by American company Meta
Platforms (formerly Facebook). It allows users to send text and voice messages, make voice and video
calls, and share images, documents, user locations, and other content. What Sapp’s client application
runs on mobile devices, and can be accessed from computers. The service requires a cellular mobile
telephone number to sign up. In January 2018, Whatsapp released a standalone business app called
Whatsapp Business which can communicate with the standard Whatsapp client.
The client application was created by Whatsapp Inc. of Mountain View, California, which was acquired
by Facebook in February 2014 for approximately US$19.3 billion. It became the world's most popular
messaging application by 2015 and had more than 2 billion users worldwide by February 2020. By 2016
it had become the primary means of Internet communication in regions including Latin America, the
Indian subcontinent, and large parts of Europe and Africa.
Whatsapp is used for different things such as communication, selling on marketplace, post and
interaction. It can also be used to share knowledge and raise awareness for different topics such as
#manaretrash, climate change to name a few. Economic development is an implementation of new
strategies that can be used to better a standard of living in a community. This can be through
organizations that help small businesses to be a success or social media. Economic development has
direct impact on the country economy. Social media has played an important role in economic
development as it has created job opportunity.
Through marketplace found on Whatsapp most businesses are able to advertise at a low rate and attract
more customers. Small businesses are now able to advertise and gain almost the same recognition as big
companies at a low price. This allows more people to access services and goods near them at the
comfort of their home and at any time. According to the article published by Deloitte in their site, it
estimates that Whatsapp enabled $227bn of economic impact and 4.5m jobs globally in 2014. This has a
positive impact on the economy as more people are being employed, especially the courier services
which deliver the products bought on Whatsapp.
Whatsapp business tools help you build your online brand, create meaningful connections with
customers and potential employees, and increase overall productivity (Bennett Conlin, 2022). Whatsapp
impact on economic development is growing as it provides its clients with the necessary information for
self-development and improving their stability. People no longer rely on one mode of income, but they
