The psychodynamic approach can be
defined as a perspective that describes the
different components of the mind, most of
which are unconscious, that operate on the
mind and our direct human behaviour and
every day experiences. This approach was
developed by Sigmund Freud who proposed
the notion of the unconscious, which lies at
the root of his well known influential theory.
Freud built this approach on the foundation
of three main assumptions: the psyche is
made up of a tripartite structure of the
personality (the id, the ego and superego);
that is constructed by the development of
the psychosexual stages that occur through
infancy and adolescence; and that the
conflicts present in the unconscious are
mediated through processes called defence
mechanisms.
According to Freud, the personality is made
