1. Copy the text of the vacancy in your document or indicate which vacancy you have
picked.
PhD student Molecular metabolic differences at the basis of gender-specific cardiac
pressure overload disorders

Answer the following questions:
2. What is the job description?
A team showed that changes in cardiac energy substrate uptake and cardiac mass precede
the drop-in energy status and cardiac dysfunction. The current translational project
investigates PO-HF development in a gender dependent manner and explores the potential
of a chosen therapeutic target. The things you will do are; studying the (patho)physiological
role of the target in substrate uptake and protein synthesis in ex vivo rat and in vitro human
cardiomyocytes as well as human cardiac biopsies. A set-up of in vivo myocardial imaging
toolbox will also have to be made and finally, the effectiveness of an existing drug in
restoring cardiac function in PO-HF will be tested.

3. Indicate the work field: Academic/business/education/communication/other
Academic (and education, 4 years studentship and funded).

4. Describe what biomedical knowledge (cell culture, PCR, etc.) is required for the position?
The experience they expect us to have are; cell culturing (including human stem cells),
rodent handling, protein analysis, standard biochemical techniques, radioisotope labelling,
langendorff perfusion, and microscopic staining,

5. Which hard skills (courses, minor, master and internship(s) of year 1,2 and 3) do you need
or could help getting this job? For an overview of courses, use the study guide:
https://studiegids.vu.nl/en/Bachelor/2019-2020/biomedical-sciences#study-program).
A finished master’s degree in Molecular Life Sciences, Health Sciences, Biology or
Medicine.

6. Describe which soft skills / personal are required of the applicant.
Good team collaboration and communication skills, as well as willingness to participate in
international collaborations.

7. Reflect whether you have these soft skills.
7a. For each skill give an example from daily life/previous experiences showing that you
have this skill.
Good team collaboration: I worked in different restaurants where team work is the key of
surviving your workday with as little mistakes as possible (if you do not work good together
miscommunications will take place and orders will be going out with mistakes or to the wrong
costumers).
Communication skills: I work voluntarily with children by training them for competitions in the
swimming pool where much communication is requirement (the children are young and
quickly distracted and do not take everyone seriously if you do not know how to
communicate with them).

7b. Which competences can you work on and how will you do this?
I am willing to participate in international collaborations, but I would not know how to work on
being better at this (I do not think I can).
