1. What are the qualities most needed to be a successful academic nurse educator?
I feel the most effective qualities for a nurse educator are being flexible and
listening to your students. Life happens and things get in the way therefore there may be
potential delays. (COVID!!!!!!!!!!!!!) You have to learn to go with the flow and remain
professional and positive.
Follow-up question: How do you embody all those qualities in your practice as an
academic nurse educator?
I feel I am always agreeable to listen to each student’s situations. I listen to my
students and try to be flexible when I need to be, but when more excuses continue with
the same student then I seem to become stricter.
2. As a novice, what was the best advice you were given, if any, and what advice would
you give to a novice academic nurse educator?
Having an open-door policy that is inviting for all students who can meet me in
my office on campus or virtual. I feel there are not many problems or situations where I
wouldn’t be willing to talk with the students about.
Have patience that teaching techniques will change related to topics and audience.
Be patient when finding the most beneficial teaching techniques and be willing to accept
corrective criticism from students and peers. It is good to remember that all of the
students in your classroom come from different upbringings and backgrounds, so you
will have a lot of differing opinions. Allow your students to voice their opinions and
listen to them. You will not agree with everything they say, but it is your responsibility
to
