UNIT 2. Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

Learning Aim A: Undertake titration and colorimetry to determine the concentration of
solutions

Title of Assignment Concentrate on keeping up your standards

Assessor Mr David Peacock

Issue Date Thursday 7th January 2021

Submission deadline

Introduction to Learning Aim A
As a technical assistant, I will use methods of titration and colorimetry to conduct
practicals. The preparation of a standard sodium carbonate [Na2CO3] solution.
Standardise an acid using your standard Na2CO3 solution; NaOH/ HCl titration using
an indicator; NaOH/HCl titration using a pH meter; using a colorimeter to determine
the concentration of two copper (ll) sulphate solutions. To show evidence of high
levels of practical skills, as well as including results from each experiment. An
evaluative report of improvements and techniques will also be included. These
written reports, as well as demonstrated practical skills of titration and colorimetry,
will demonstrate levels of practical skills to the chemical plant and highlight my
progress as a newly appointed technical assistant at the large chemical plant,
Chemcalquip.

Task 1

Part 1 -preparation of a standard solution
Apparatus
● Weighing balance
● Calibration weights - to calibrate the weighing balance
● Anhydrous sodium carbonate between 2g
● distilled water
● Weighing boat- to weigh the anhydrous sodium carbonate
● 250cm3 Large beaker
● 150cm3 Measuring cylinder
● Stirring rod
● 250cm3 volumetric flask

Method

, ● The Weighing balance was calibrated before use
● Between 1.25 and 1.45g of anhydrous sodium carbonate was weighed.
● Sodium carbonate was carefully transferred into a large beaker, the
measurements were accurately recorded to determine the exact mass that
was transferred.
● 150cm3 of distilled water was added to the beaker , the sodium carbonate
was stirred completely until it had dissolved.
● The 150cm3 solution was carefully and accurately added to a 250cm3
volumetric flask and distilled water was added to make the solution to add up
to 250cm3.
