NAME OF STUDENT: ………………………………….

Please provide fair and honest comments regarding the following:

Was the general conduct of the student irreproachable (on time, conduct according to school
requirements for teachers)?

• The student’s conduct was irreproachable because she showed great enthusiasm
for her school work and always wanted to help in class. She came to school on time
for her practicals and always asked questions where she did not understand. The
student blended in well with the other teachers as she sought to know and learn
more about the profession.

Was the level of subject knowledge of the student sufficient for the presentation of lessons?

• The student’s knowledge was sufficient and on point because she does extra
lessons and tutoring for the learners. She was also part of the Global Teacher’s
Institute social development program that helps learners struggling on Saturdays.

Did the student make use of your suggestions and recommendations to improve her/his
work?

• Yes, she made use of my suggestions and even helped me improve my relationship
with the students because we talked after every lesson/ lesson observation.

Did the student prepare properly when she/he had to present lessons?

• Yes, she made lovely power-point presentations and lesson plans that were very
eye catching and interesting. Although, with a bit of practice here and there, she
would be great at what she does.

,Did the student work regularly/ continuously on her/his portfolio?

• Yes, she constantly did her portfolio and all her school work and asked questions
where she did not understand.

Did the student complete her/his portfolio during the Practical Teaching period?

YES/NO Yes

Strong points of the student/ good qualities and good work done:

• She used to stay over at school and help the learners who did not understand the
lesson/topic.
Learners used to come to her during break time and she always was welcoming in
helping them. The student didn’t mind setting Friday tests for the learners, mark and
give them feedback. She also volunteered to help with extracurricular activities.

Aspects on which student still have to improve to be ready to enter education as a beginner
teacher:

• The student should show more confidence and be sure of her work, because she
knows her work, she just needs to be sure of it. She should stop being shy and just
keep the ball rolling because she’s doing great as is.

SIGNATURE SCHOOL STAMP

, 2.3 The school context
Name: ………….. Secondary School

Where: ……………………..Pretoria, Gauteng

Type (urban well resourced, rural well resources, private well resourced, FET college, urban
less well resourced, rural less well resourced, private less well resourced): Rural less well
resourced

Explain your choice: The school is big yet learners share resources like tables and
chairs. You find 3 learners sharing 2 chairs and a desk. Some windows are broken and
doors need to be fixed. Also, there is a feeding scheme for the poor learners who do not
have food at home.

Fee paying or non-fee-paying? Fee paying Number of learners: 539 Number of teachers: 42

Resources: Science lab, classes and kitchen

Community in which the school is situated: ……………….

Reflection: Why is the school context important? How would this influence your task as a
teacher?

This will help me understand the kind of school it is and the learners I’ll be dealing
with.
Understanding the school context helps in meeting the educational needs of all
learners, it also helps me as a teacher to recognize the socialization processes that
help in building positive and negative school attitudes. This will aid me in
understanding the societal expectations, school structures, and peer influences that
play a role in understanding learners’ attitudes towards learning.
