M3 – Review how different travel and tourism organisations motivate staff in the
workplace
Review on how Virgin Atlantic and Cadbury World motivate their staff in the workplace

Virgin Atlantic:
Working environment –
Virgin Atlantic has been seen to have a good working environment and values its employees
to the highest extent. The job roles the airline offers allows for employees to keep their
motivation as they offer a high amount of job satisfaction, such as receptionists meeting
new people everyday and getting the satisfaction of helping them. Working as part of the
cabin crew team has employees gaining job satisfaction through their ability to travel to new
destinations according to the location of the flight. The reason being, they meet a new
variety of people everyday and are able to keep motivated through helping out customers
with needs such as bringing them snacks from the snack bar. They’re also given the chance
to rest at a high quality accommodation if it’s a long haul flight. This idea of rest keeps the
cabin crew motivated and happy as they know they’ll be rewarded for their efforts with the
customers. To keep employees safe on their stay overs, they’re provided with travel
insurance and a fund to cover the costs of their stay over.

Incentives –
Working for Virgin Atlantic means working with customers and meeting their needs. To keep
their employees happy and motivated, they’re offered discounts of 40% on every airline
class from economy to first class and are paid a good amount of salary per year. Such as an
airline Captain who makes £120,000 as their salary. Being given the opportunity to have
cheaper airline tickets and a high amount of pay keeps a pilot motivated to meet the needs
of the job and take charge of their responsibilities to the highest extent. Such as all pre-flight
checks before take-off. The pilot understands that in order to keep their job, they need to
please their employers. For a First Officer pilot, they’re kept motivated by the chance of a
promotion to Co-pilot or even Captain. By working to their highest quality, the pilot will feel
their pleasing their employer to a higher extent and that they stand out from the other
pilots.

Working relationships –
Communicating and making employees feel important through continuous training helps to
make them feel a sense of job security and that they’re cared for by Virgin Atlantic. The
business does this by putting higher ups with the employees in their marketing team for the
airline. The higher ups use this experience to figure out what the employees or one
individual needs the most, such as one employee feeling they could work better as a team
worker than an implementer. Along with keeping internal communication open, allowing
employees to be more efficient could rely on the type of technology they’re given.

Virgin Atlantic likes to ensure that their employees working at the front desk have up to
date computers that allow them to quickly process customers and get them through to their
flight, this is a result of using internal communications to figure out what employees need to
make their jobs more comfortable. These factors help to keep employees motivated as they
feel they’re being listened to and have their job roles being invested to, therefore, making
them feel job secure as the employer is wanting to put so much effort into keeping them
happy and efficient.
