COMMUNITY RESOURCES 2 Community Resources: The American Red Cross The American Red Cross, otherwise referred to as ARC, is a humanitarian organization that was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton (Our History, 2018). The first chapter of the American Red Cross provided services to members of the armed forces and their families along with providing disaster relief in the United States and worldwide (Our History, 2018). The original platform of the ARC included first aid, water safety, and public health nursing. Today the ARC provides care in five critical areas: individuals impacted by disasters in America, support for military members and families, blood collection, processing and distribution, health and safety education and training (CPR and first aid instruction, swimming lessons) and international relief and development (Our History, 2018). The ARC also assists globally with disasters such as earthquakes, fires, droughts, and health epidemics and they aid in preparing for future disasters
