A QUALITATIVE STUDY: THE INTRINSIC AND
EXTRINSIC FACTORS THAT AFFECT PERFORMANCE IN
ELITE SOUTH-AFRICAN FEMALE TRACK ATHLETES
Author
ABSTRACT
The purpose of the study will be to find out what intrinsic and extrinsic factors affect female
track athletes. Secondly, to determine if the support is available for female athletes in South
Africa to overcome the factors that are considered as performance diminishers. If we look
, into the South-African context we generate a small amount of elite female track athletes. If
we can define the factors that affect their performance in both areas of intrinsic and extrinsic
we will be able to determine where the strengths and weaknesses lie. Once we know what
areas of weaknesses need to be resolved we can look at if they have the level of support to
achieve. It is an important question to investigate why we produce only a small amount of
successful elite female athletes that are still residing in South Africa and what are the
elements affecting them. Research Method: a qualitative study Sampling: Sampling for the
study will be done by way of purposeful sampling meaning the participant was selected based
on particular criteria the group will be provided by ASA and USSA. Data collection:
Collecting the information will be done by a predetermined open-ended questionnaire.
Method of analysis: The research study will be conducted through qualitative measures. The
data compiled from the questionnaire will be analysed thematically and processed by using
inductive analysis.
Keywords: Female track athlete; intrinsic and extrinsic factors; athlete performance; mental
toughness; level of support for elite female athletes; Qualitative study; inductive analysis;
South-Africa; sports psychology
