CLASS DISCUSSION

Elevation View
● It is a vertical plane
● It is all four sides of an object/building

Plan
● You take a cut horizontally through the building
● You are looking at it from above like a bird
● You are slicing through the building at every level
○ Examples:
■ Foundation level
■ First-floor level
■ Second-floor level
● Floor Plan
○ You can see the thickness of the walls
○ You can see the width and length of a room
○ It is a horizontal section

Section View
● It is a vertical plane like the elevation view
● You will be slicing through the building vertically to see the volume of space within the
building
● You can see the width and height but not the length or depth
● It is the same as the plan with quarter inch equals one foot
● Full Building Section

,Notes: ARCH 110 (2/23) - CRN 10646 (2)

○ It is from one exterior wall to the other exterior wall
○ It is revealing the vertical organization of the building
○ It is revealing interior volumes
○ It is revealing the building systems
■ Floor System
● You can see the thickness of the floor
● The dark lines are profiles that define the floor system
○ They represent the floor and ceiling
● The 24-inch on center, 2 by 10-floor joist is holding up a floor
■ Foundation System
● You have the foundation with its slab on grade
● The foundational wall system is made up of a concrete wall
■ Roof System
● There are trusses or rafters
○ Depending on which way you cut them, you can see the
triangle, slope of the roof, or individual spacing
● There is a low slope roof
○ It has a slight pitch to it
○ It could be a steep roof

, Notes: ARCH 110 (2/23) - CRN 10646 (2)

○ It could be a dome
○ The height has different levels
■ Examples:
● Partial basement
● Grade line
● First-floor level
● An upper level which is reached by the stairs
○ You can show what is between the wall
○ You can show curly lines that represent installation
○ You can see vertical circulation
■ Some stairs go up
○ There should be a pitch notation
○ You can see structural grids on building sections
■ Example: There are grid bubbles that mark the intersection of steel
columns
● They have a center line and distance between each column
○ You can see vertical elevations
○ There are centerlines
■ They align with the finished floor level
■ They align with finished ceilings
○ There is an elevation bullet
■ It looks like a gun sight
■ It gives you the elevation
● Examples:
○ The finished first floor is usually a 00 reference
○ The lower basement could have -10
○ You can choose to show a certain amount of information
○ The drawing suggests:
■ There will be multiple structural members which are probably roof trusses
● They will be spaced a certain distance apart
● There will be layers of insulation
■ The general structure of the building is made up of multiple members like
floor joists
● They are spaced 16 inches apart
○ This is wood frame construction
○ It is not made out of poured concrete
○ Typically, the building department will set the height of your ridge
○ They put a human figure in the drawing
■ It is not typical
■ It is a telling object/symbol
● When people see people, they immediately put themselves in that
position
● People relate to the figure and understand the experience inside
the building
○ You can combine information
■ Example: Interior elevations with the full building section
○ The Bedroom
■ It has a flat ceiling
● There is a dark profile line at the slope of the ceiling
● It follows the rafter tail and goes down the wall
■ There are insulation and some ceiling joists
