SLK220- CHAPTER 2 NOTES:
2-3a The Duplex Mind:
-The human mind has two main systems:
The conscious ego
The unconscious
- The theory that the mind has two parts is called the duplex
mind.
-Term is taken from a type of housing: a duplex house is a single
house that has two separate dwellings or apartments in it.
- ‘Duplex mind’ suggests that each individual person contains
two separate parts to their mind.

Two Systems:
We have two systems:
😊 Automatic system
😊 The deliberate system.
The automatic system:
»Operates outside of consciousness.
»Bigger than the deliberate system
»Operates by impulse
»Does simple jobs to make your life easier.
» Continues to operate during sleep, sorting information and
making simple judgements.
»It handles the endless mundane tasks
Example: Interpreting, organizing, and categorizing all
the information that comes in through your eyes and
ears.

, Deliberate/conscious system:
»Operates in consciousness
»Involves conscious deliberation about what would be the best
thing to do.
»Turns on when you wake up and turn off when you go to sleep.
» Processes information.
Example: You will wake up to the sound of your own
name spoken more softly than almost any other word,
which means that your mind can tell the difference in the
meanings of words even when you are asleep.
What Is Consciousness For?
- The automatic system generally runs almost everything.
Example: Walking as you don’t control the movements of
your legs and feet. It is done automatically, not
deliberatively or reflectively.
-Behaviour is driven and directed by automatic
responses that occur outside of awareness.
-Automatic system can learn, think, choose, and respond
as it has ideas and emotions.
- It knows your ‘self’ and other people. Even when people
believe they are deciding something, often it can be
shown that the automatic system has already decided.
Differences between the Systems
Deliberate: Automatic
Slow Fast
Flexible Inflexible
Precise calculations Estimates
Does one thing at a time Does numerous things
at once.
