, QUESTION 1:
Teachers are often asked why they must teach entrepreneurship to all learners if South Africa does
not need all learners to be an entrepreneur.
Why do you think it is important to teach entrepreneurship at school? Give five reasons for your
answer.
• Entrepreneurs provide and create job opportunities.
Teaching a classroom full of learners about the various opportunities that entrepreneurship can
supply to the communities could possibly encourage some of the learners to venture towards it.
Small businesses – especially in the informal sector – are the ones who create the most job
opportunities globally, even more so than larger companies.
• Entrepreneurs can identify and recognize problems.
Even if not many learners become entrepreneurs, the few who do – that were encouraged at school
level – can greatly add to the economy. It can teach learners a sense of preparation for an uncertain
future. Entrepreneurs are responsible for producing goods and services. The entrepreneur combines
labour, capital, technology and raw materials or components in the production process in order to
release it as something usable to the public. The production process has a wide range of meaning and
includes trading activities like selling at grocery stores or other kinds of shops.
• Encourage students to make the world a better place.
Entrepreneurs constantly look to solve problems and develop what has not yet been developed in
order to meet the needs with the help of their products or services. Entrepreneurs are needed to
build the economy of a country. South Africa may be rich in natural resources like diamonds, gold, oil,
coal and so on, but a country does not need natural resources to build a strong economy and increase
its wealth. Most of the countries in the Far East have few natural resources, but most of their citizens
are entrepreneurs. Japanese entrepreneurs, for example, import raw materials, process them and
then export them throughout the world.
• Entrepreneurs are catalysts to generate wealth and a higher standard of living.
Entrepreneurship education helps learners identify problems that haven’t yet been dealt with, in
return for profit. This is an outstanding feature of the free market system as compared with socialism.
Entrepreneurs usually employ other people, which improves their standard of living. In buying
products from other businesses, entrepreneurs benefit such businesses. Teachers can support and
encourage their students to be motivated by a desire to help people with a product or service to
enhance the quality of life.
• Better educated entrepreneurs will be better equipped in starting new ventures.
Entrepreneurship education teaches learners resilience through possible tough times and helps them
make harder decisions. One cannot say that educated entrepreneurs will necessarily be better
entrepreneurs, but they will definitely be better equipped to know when, where and how to start new
ventures. They will also be better equipped to maximize their talents within the community, for their
own sake as well as that of the community as a whole. Entrepreneurship education offers the youth
new economic tools to change their view of themselves. The use of new terminology, business plan
and the experience of generating income from their own ideas have an empowering and
transformational effect on many youths.
