 There are many diff categories (ie family, friendships, romantic,
sexual, work etc.)

 Characterized by feelings of love + attraction for another person
o Often involved feelings of infatuation, intimacy &
commitment
 Differ according to cultures & beliefs
o Ie. Eastern countries – may depend on parents
 3 powerful influences on who we chose: Self identitiy, similarity and
proximity
o Self identity – religious preference, racial identity, social
status
 Choose those w similar backgrounds

How we see rls in the media
 Individual media representations (ie. Hashtags, ig, twt)

,  Mass media representations (ie. Celebrities; marriage; break ups etc
– kim and Kanye)
o Mass media always looking to benefit themselves
o Media rep are down to the reason they are being discussed
 Sharing +ve and -ve elements of the rls (only when its really bad or
really good – never just ‘its fine’)


Psychology of Disney – romantic rls

 The old vs new Disney (what has changed)
 How are RR portrayed? Is it just a fantasy?


Disney through the ages
Traditional -
 Ads – encourage girls to associate themselves to the princesses
 Stereotypical representations – look for their prince (ie. Ariel, belle,
cinderella, snow white, pocahantas)


Modern
 Modern, independent
 Brave, Frozen, Tangled, Princess & The Frog


Movies must contain themes, characters & stories relevant to mass
audience worldviews (Davis, 2006)
 But other states that movies actually shape the audience’s
worldview (England et al., 2011)


Disney appeals to a large young audience = influential role on media
