Hippies opposed the War in Vietnam, Commercialism and overall establishment of social norms.
Hippie fashion originated from the opposition to commercialism.
Those involved with this movement sought a peaceful and happy life, which often led to experimenting with
marijuana and LSD.
Anti-establishment aspects created psychedelic rock.
The counterculture movement was in support of the anti-war movement.
Psychedelic genre famous for its musical replication of the experience of mind-altering drugs. (SGT Pepper’s
Lonely Hearts Club)
Woodstock Music Festival – ‘three days of peace and music’
Burning draft cards was an iconic symbol of the anti-war movement.
Guerrilla theatre and community activism threatened the support of the Vietnam War.
Guerrilla theatre – form of socially and politically active public performance, actors use satire, improvisation and
drama to disrupt cultural norms.
Rallies and protests became characterised by music, sex, drugs, vulgar language and nudity.
Visual deviance seen as an opposition to war.

The Abortion Act – abortion made legal 1967
The Sexual Offences Act – Passed 1967 – homosexual private practices between two men over age of 21
The Divorce Reform Act – Prior to 1969 Women could only divorce their husband on rounds of adultery.
