Unit 16: Human Resource Management
P3 & M2

, Assignment
P3: outline how an organization motivates its employees.
M2: compare the use of motivation theories in an organization.

, Introduction
This assignment focuses on the ways in which the National Health Service (NHS)
motivate their employees. The different motivational theories that have been created and
used amongst different organizations will be explained and related. They will also be
compared to determine the best theory and reason why said theory is the most suitable.
Furthermore, the different reward systems which are offered will be listed, explained and
also related to the NHS.

, Motivational Theories
There are seven (7) theories that are used to motivate employees. This includes:

1. Taylor
2. Mayo
3. Maslow
4. Herzberg
5. McGregor
6. McClelland
7. Vroom

Motivation is defined as having a reason to do a particular task or job within the
workplace. There are many factors that push an employee to do their best.

, Taylor
● This theory was created by Frederick Winslow Taylor, in which he stated the idea that
employees are motivated by money.
● This was thought because employees do not generally enjoy working therefore this theory add
controls.
● The workers will then be paid according to how much work they do which is called ‘time piece
rate’.
● This then further pushes employees to work harder and maximize their productivity.

● Taylor’s theory is not used by the NHS due to the fact that
money does not motivate all employees for they have
different wants and needs when working in an organization.

● However, this theory is also useful because it can be seen as a
rewards system when employees work hard.
