1. Identify the organs of the digestive system and list their major functions
2. Describe the anatomy of the abdominal regions
3. Describe the anatomy of the stomach and its blood supply role in digestion and absorption
4. Describe the anatomy of the small intestine and its blood supply and the accessory digestive
organs
Six functions of the digestive system:
▪ Ingestion
▪ Mechanical processing – crashing and shearing
▪ Chemical breakdown of food or digestion
▪ Secretion of water, acids, enzyme, buffers and salts
▪ Absorption of organic substances, electrolytes, vitimins and water
▪ Excretion – removal of waste products
,Sections of the digestion system:
▪ Oral cavity
▪ Pharynx
▪ Osophagus (esophagus)
▪ Stomach
▪ Small intestine
▪ Large intestine
▪ Accessory organ – liver and
pancrease
Stomach:
- Important organ
- Involves the first stage of processing and breaking down food
- Stores food
- The food located in the stomach is known as chyme
- It is a folded structure that can expand
- Has a greater surface area thus allowing for food to be stored at a greater capacity
- Contains acid secreting cells
Blood supply:
- The stomach receives arterial
supply of blood from the
abdominal aorta
- Celiac trunk is the main
artery supplying blood
- Gastric arteries
