For my discussion, I have selected FACEBOOK “Marketplace”.
Facebook is a social media platform that allows users to connect with friends, co-workers, family, old
school mates and it also allows for users to connect with other users. The platform is free to sign up
and is now currently owned by Meta Platforms, Inc. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg,
Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes in 2004. It is a global social
networking platform with billions of users worldwide and is listed on the Nasdaq 100, S&P 100 and
S&P 500 stock market indexes.
Facebook is accessible on all smartphones, computers, laptops and tablets with internet
connectivity. The platform has over the last few recent years evolved to become one of the largest
goods and services trading platforms. This is due to their inclusion of “Facebook Marketplace” which
allows users to exchange goods and services freely among each other. This has created a large digital
marketplace where millions of Rands worth of trading happens daily.
This marketplace has afforded many small businesses the opportunity to trade on a global scale with
just a smartphone. Products ranging from; furniture to motor vehicles to any services imaginable,
are all available on this platform.
Buyers meet sellers directly without the middleman. Private transactions happen daily. Various
service providers, manufacturers and suppliers use this platform to service their clientele and
customers, free of charge. This platform is also used to source new potential business as well as for
advertising purposes therefore driving economic development and growth in various societies.
Real life example:
I was recently looking to purchase a pair of studio monitors and began my search on Facebook
marketplace. The process is very easy and practical. First you log into your Facebook profile and click
