Question 1
1.1) The purpose of using a class discussion strategy is to help learners to speak with
confidence in grammatically correct sentences and to stay on topic.
Outline TWO (2) activities where you would use the class discussion strategy to develop
listening and speaking skills among your Grade 3 learners.
Activity 1
Ask learners to tell their daily news and discuss with the whole class, explaining any
unfamiliar information as well as invite learners to participate in the morning
orientation where we will discuss for instance the daily weather chart and birthday
calendar. I will prompt learners with suitable lower order and higher order questions
to develop their critical thinking skills and through careful differentiation will ensure
that all learners have a chance to participate in discussions in order to develop their
listening and speaking skills as well as their vocabulary in order for them to speak with
confidence and in grammatically correct sentences.
Activity 2
Shared reading – I will use shared reading as a whole class where we will read a story
book, but first we will discuss the cover page of the book then as other relevant
questions and discuss the questions before we start reading the story and find out
what the story is about and what the learners think is going to happen. We will then
read page by page and discuss page by page and towards the end of the book,
learners will be asked to predict how the story will end and give their different
opinions.
1.2) Read the following scenario and then answer the questions below:
Lerato is a Grade 2 learner at Khayalami Primary school. She struggled to read most of
the words in her home language. Miss Molefe, her teacher encouraged and assisted
her to read words by teaching her the skill of decoding the sound-symbol relationships
that make up words. Without the assistance of Miss Molefe, Lerato would have been
unsuccessful at decoding and reading words on her own. Miss Molefe’s role was to
scaffold this learning as Lerato works at her zone of proximal development (ZPD).
1.2.1) Define the concept zone of proximal development.
The zone of proximal development refers to the difference between what a learner
can do without help and what he or she can achieve with guidance from a teacher,
parent or more skilled individual.
1.2.2) Explain how you would apply the knowledge (ZPD) to develop the learners’ speaking
skills. Give an activity that you would do with your Grade 2 learners.
As a teacher, I can help to scaffold the learner’s speaking skills by repeating and
responding to what they say, when responding to them, I can use new and
interesting words as well as model correct language use as well as expand and extend
