Attaches to beta 2 receptors on bronchial cell Open airway and allow for oxygen increase
membranes. Relax bronchial smooth muscle. (asthma/COPD patients)
Complications Medication Administration
Anxiety, dizziness, tremor, drowsiness, palpitations, 2.5mg three or four times daily
hypertension, tachycardia, hypokalemia by nebulization over 5 to 15 min
inhaled- short acting
Contraindications/Precautions
Hypersensitive to albuterol, arrhythmias, seizure disorders,
decrease in potassium levels, hepatic failure, Nursing Interventions
hyperthyroidism
Monitor serum potassium levels
because of hypokalemia
Be aware drug tolerance can
Interactions develop with prolonged use
Beta blockers: inhibit effects of medication
Digoxin: decrease serum levels
mechanism of action inhibitors, potassium wasting
diuretics
Client Education
Teach patient to use inhaler
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Instruct patient to wash
mouthpiece
Monitor shortness of breath after administration Advise patient to wait 1 minute
observe return of normal respiratory rate between inhalers
absence of wheezing
