Disease and Representation Book
Chapter 1
o The Other as Diseased.
In essay ‘what is schizophrenia’ by Manfred Bleuler,
authentic in modern psychiatry, said that the idea that we
mentally, naturally disintegrate is still a monstrous
concept. P1, footnote 1.
This fear of collapse is in the western image of all diseases.
We project this fear onto other people whom collapse into
illness has already visibly occurred- they are ‘the other’,
are vulnerable. We, by contrast, are stable and in control,
safe. Mary douglas- ‘yearning for rigidity in us all’ p2,
footnote 2.
Art is when you distort reality; you have control over this.
When we show disease via art we are projecting our sense
of inevitable loss. Showing the patient is showing the
disease in human form.
