Question 1
Postmodern literature is different to literature from earlier times. In a short
paragraph of 10 lines, and using your own words, explain what makes it
different. Mention at least three of postmodern literature’s features to support
your answer.
Postmodern literature is a literary movement that avoids absolute meaning and
instead emphasizes play, fragmentation, metafiction, and intertextuality.
Postmodernism is characterized by the confident use of previous styles and
customs. It arose from scepticism and distrust of reason. It is defined as literature
from the post-WWII period to the present. The works of postmodern literature reflect
the social and / or political perspective of society, as shown through its realistic
character, its connection to current events, and its socio-economic message. It is a
form of literature characterized by metafiction, unreliable narration, self-reflexivity,
and intertextuality, often addressing both historical and political issues.
Question 2
In a short paragraph of 10 lines, and using your own words, explain to a class
of intermediate learners why a good plot is important to a story.
The plot is also a story of an event with an emphasis on causality. Plots are arguably
the most important element of the story. It's literally a series of events, in which order
we learn more about the characters, settings, and morals of the story. In a sense, the
plot is the trunk on which all the other elements of the story grow. It sets the mood,
reveals characters and conflicts, and provides clues to the theme of the story. Plots,
characters and settings make an impact. The theme is a lesson that the author
brings back with the dynamics created by the story. Every story, whether it's a novel
or your favourite TV show, has a plot, and all plots share a common structure. The
plot structure consists of five main parts that occur in the same order. Start,
ascending plot, climax, descending plot, and resolution.
