What is Quality Management?

Quality management is the practice of monitoring the activities, tasks and

processes (inputs) used to produce products or services (outputs) so that they can

be kept at a high and consistent level. Quality management consists of four main

components: quality planning, quality assurance, quality control and quality

improvement. The process of implementing four components in an organization is

known as Total Quality Management (TQM). Quality management (and TQM)

focuses not only on the quality of the output (products and services), but also on

the inputs, tasks and processes by which the output is produced. Ideally, it not only

increases the quality of products and / or services, but also improves the process in

which products and / or services are created, resulting in consistently superior

quality products and services. shop more. History of quality management

Where exactly does quality management come from? When did people start

managing quality? And how did quality management develop?

It was not until the 1920s that the concept of quality management emerged in

business, when statistical methods were used in manufacturing quality control

methods. Known as statistical quality control, this method was developed by

Walter A. Shewhart and later performed by W. Edwards Deming during World

War II. Japan began adopting the concept of quality management in the 1950s and

, 1960s to rebuild its economy and dispel the idea that Japanese products meant low

prices. Japanese engineers and manufacturers sought independent support from

Deming and Joseph Juran. Request for his contributions to the statistical methods

of quality control and Juran for his contributions to the concept of quality

management.

With the help of Deming and Juran, the Japanese economy has had a boom since

the 1970s. In the 1980s, quality management philosophies and methods returned to

the United States when the Ford Motor Company recruited Deming. to devise a

quality initiative to keep up with the era of Japanese manufacturers by focusing on

high-efficiency TQM.

Today, quality management is still very much alive. Advancements in technology

(social media, feedback processes, etc.) have made quality management a must for

any business looking to compete and expand its customer base.

Philosophies and processes will evolve as customers need to be satisfied and

businesses need to evolve and adapt to stay relevant in quality management.
