WGU C493: Leadership and Professional Image Task 2 Portfolio 2020 C493 Task 2 A: Professional mission statement and summary A1: Creating a professional mission statement My mission as a Registered Nurse is to make a positive difference in my co-workers, to promote health, healing and well-being of all patients in my care to the best of my ability, and treat everyone with respect and dignity. My mission is to be a competent nurse who fully engages with my co-workers to provide outstanding healthcare for our patients and advocates for them to enhance their care outcomes. I will continue with my nursing education to enhance my practice and advance my career in the company that I work in. My time and energy are focused on continuing my education and once I have completed my BSN studies, I plan to become certified in Case Management, the nursing field that I work in. A1a: How the mission will guide my nursing career Reflecting on my professional mission statement I see how it will guide me throughout my nursing career. I have never written a mission statement before. It is nice to have the direction that I want to go in my nursing journey written so I can stay on track and focused on my goals. My mission statement will also help me evaluate myself throughout my career. A2: Professional summary A2a: How artifacts represent me as a learner and a healthcare professional All of my artifacts represent me as a learner and a healthcare provider. They demonstrate my knowledge, skills and hard work that I have used to achieve this milestone in my professional life. In C361 Evidence-Based Practice and Applied Nursing Research Task 1, I learned how to identify health issues and use collected data to develop corrective actions. I was able to learn how to use evidence based research to improve healthcare. I used nursing theories that I learned in C304 Professional Roles and Values Task 1 as a guide in my practice. I found all the theories and models very interesting. I use Kurt Lewin’s Change Theory almost daily in my current role. I enjoyed C489 Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership Task 3 most. It was interesting to learn about other countries’ health care systems. With healthcare being such a hot topic in American politics, finding out how other countries provide healthcare to their citizens and how much these services cost. A2b: How artifacts represent my professional strengths I have always enjoyed research, audits and investigating. My work in C361 Evidence- Based Practice and Applied Nursing Research Task 1 represented my research strength. To identify a problem, research it and come up with a solution based on evidence is a thrill. It removes all feelings from decision making. As I have said before, I use Lewin’s Change Theory from C304 Professional Roles and Values almost daily. I did not even know it was a theory prior to taking this class. In my role as a nurse, my work involves implementing change. This artifact represents my professional strength by showing my ability to successfully promote the system and process changes with the staff and teach these changes to them so that they are successful. A2c: Challenges I encountered during the program My first challenge that I encountered during the program started prior to enrolling. I have serious math anxiety. So much so that I dropped out a couple of days prior to starting originally. Four months later, I started and asked that my first class be Statics. It took me four months to complete this class with a tremendous amount of help from my instructor and the Math Center. I passed that test on the first try and that was a big self-esteem boost. Some other challenges that I encountered was that I graduated in 1982 so it had been awhile since I attended class and was not sure what to expect. I work full time and often have to travel for work so sometimes that would be a problem due to being tired, internet connection issues in some hotels and trying to get motivated. A2ci: How I overcame the challenges I overcame the challenges like have always done. I do what scared me most first and get it out of the way. Then I can move on. During
