 Central- Along centre axis of body
o Brain
 Cerebrum
 Biggest part- responsible for higher functions; memory, thought,
reasoning, emotions, language, learning
 Receives sensory information from body and initiates voluntary
movement (consciously aware of it)
 Cerebellum
 Second largest section
 Adjusts and fine tunes movement- helps coordinate movements
initiated by Cerebrum; helps with balance, posture, and complex
reflexes
 Brain Stem
 DO NOT DAMAGE- CAUSES DEATH
 Works with Diencephalon
 Responsible for basic functions on subconscious level; heart rate,
coughing, vomiting, blood pressure
 Midbrain
 Pons
 Medulla
 Diencephalon
 Assist with sensory input and relay back to Cerebrum
 Involved in sleep regulation; anger, aggression
 Thalamus
 Hypothalamus
 Pituitary Gland
o Helps with homeostasis; temperature regulation and digestion

o Spinal Cord- Continuation of brain stem; conducts sensory information from peripheral
nervous system and brings it to brain
 Cervical
 Thoracis
 Lumbar
 Sacral (Stops before Coccygeal)
 Peripheral- Away from centre of body; link between central nervous system and rest of body
o Spinal Nerves- Come off of spinal cord and supply the extremities (font leg, back leg, tail,
etc...)
 Radial Nerve- Beside Ulna; funny bone
 Femoral Nerve- Beside Femur
 Sciatic Nerve- Goes down centre of hind leg
 Mostly in skeletal muscle
 MUST KNOW WHERE THEY ARE TO PREVENT PARALYSIS AND PAIN WHEN
