, Question 1:
Mention four different kinds of genres that are used to differentiate children’s
literature. (4)
There are many different genres that are used in children’s literature some of these
include:
1. Genres by age of readers.
2. Genres by the purpose that books aim to achieve.
3. Genres by the place of origin.
4. Genres by content.
Question 2:
In your own words, discuss the value of educational children’s books and the
role that entertainment plays in such books. (5)
Educational children’s books play a vital role in the development and entertainment
of todays’ youth. This is because books assist kids in the development of their most
basic language skills and it profoundly expands their vocabularies. It provides
students with the opportunity to become more aware of their own cultural heritage.
Educational books also teach children valuable lessons about life and living, some of
these include manners, kindness, etiquette and values to have in life. These books
play a role in entertaining our children as when they are reading a book, they go
through the process of visualising and re-enacting the context of the book which
keeps them constantly mentally active. There are also hidden games that are
embedded in certain books which keep children entertained and constantly
interested in the storyline.
Question 3:
Discuss how therapeutic children’s books can provide a context to help a
child who is struggling with problems such as bullying to better manage their
problems. Please provide examples of children’s stories that achieve this with
a specific problem of your choosing. (6)
According to TL 50, a therapeutic books is a book that deals with
problems/situations that children are facing and they also provide strategies on how
to cope and deal with these problems & situations. The main and the first therapeutic
book I have chosen to discuss is Llama Llama and the Bully Goat by Anna
Dewdney. This book covers the topic of bullying and it offers readers a realistic pre-
primary experience which informs learners in a light-hearted way of what to do when
being bullied at school.
