Non-ionising treatment
MRI scans
The first type of non-ionising treatment that is widely used is the MRI scan this type uses
magnetic fields that are very strong,it also uses radio waves which produce images of the
body. Patients enter the MRI machine which is a machine which is very large and has a tube
shape inside the machine it will produce radio waves which will create images of the tissue
of the body including all the organs. these are not just simple images but images that are
very detailed.MRI is usually used for scans of the chest, abdomen and pelvis too.
This scan sends waves such as magnetic and radiofrequency waves into the body of the
patient, the energy in which are released by the atoms in the magnetic field will send a signal
to the computer once this happens the computer will convert this data signal to an image this
is done by using advanced mathematical formulas.
According to many sources, there is no strong evidence to suggest that MRI scans have any
risks when undergoing treatment this, therefore, means that this is one of the safest methods
to use in treating patients.
Benefits
● No exposure to radiation so patients are able to use this treatment safely
● Shows clear detailed anatomy of the body and also shows details of the painful parts
of the body too which helps the doctor to understand more about the patients pain
● The availability is everywhere all hospitals will be equipped with one of these scans
due to the large amounts of benefits it has.
Limitations
● Very long periods of time where patients may have to be placed in the same spot
which could lead to discomfort and if they move the scan may have to start from the
beginning
● They are able to find painful areas however they are not able to distinguish the
difference between painless and painful abnormalities
● MRI is unable to show whether the abnormal tissue is functioning normally
, Laser Treatment
The next type of non-ionising treatment is laser treatment this is a medical treatment that
utilises light which is focused. The way these treatment works is that the laser shifts the
wavelength into a specific wavelength what this does is that it allows it to focus into a beam
which can be used in many ways. In medical treatment this laser allows doctors to do
specific tasks such as working in high-level precision where it is very accurate the way this is
done is by it focusing on a specific area.
This treatment treats tumours they do this by destroying them or by shrinking them they also
destroy precancerous growth and many more other uses include is that they relieve
symptoms of cancer too. Kidneys can be treated by this treatment too by the removal of
kidney stones other uses is also treating detached retinas this can therefore mean that they
can also improve vision too. More uses are treating back pain that has got to do with the
nerves
Risks of laser treatment include bacterial infections, burns from the laser, discomfort while
the treatment is done and also after the treatment, crusting and blistering there are many
more risks but just looking at these risks we can see that these risks are not harmful and can
be treatable very easily.
Benefits
● Procedures that are non-invasive
● There is a reduced risk of any kind of infections
● Very precise controlled surgery so very minimal or no injury to the normal skin
● Results that are improved therapeutic wise
Limitations
● Takes a long time to get the results
● Skin burning is involved so patients will be in a lot of discomfort this is due to the heat
in several sessions of this treatment
● This treatment also does not suit everyone as everyone has various skin types so
some may benefit and some may be really affected by this treatment
