CELLS
- All living things are made up of cells.
- Cells can either be prokaryotic or Eukaryotic
- Eukaryotic cells are complex and are found in animals and plant cells. They are large
of sizes between 10 micrometres to 100 micrometres. They use mitosis and meiosis
for cell division. They have a nucleus which contains genetic material.
- Prokaryotic cells are simple and small, they are found in bacteria. They do not have a
nucleus. Instead the genetic material just floats in the cytoplasm. Also they contain
plasmid.
- Eukaryotes are organisms made up of eukaryotic cells.
- Prokaryotes are single celled organisms.
- Different parts of cells are called subcellular structures.
- Cells are specialised to carry out different functions.
Animal Cell:
- Most animal cells contain all these structures.
- Cell Membrane: controls the passage of things going into and out of the cell. It acts
as a barrier and holds the cells together. It also contains receptor molecules.
- Cytoplasm: it is a gel like substance. Chemical reactions take place here. It contains
enzymes that would control these reactions. It also contains dissolved nutrients,
salts, and organelles.
- Nucleus: This contains the genetic material (i.e chromosomes), which determines the
function and the appearance of the cell. It also controls the activities of the cell. It
also has information to make new cells or organisms.
