Unit 8 promoting public health

Task 2:

P5: Explain how approaches to health promotion and protection have been applied in a
selected health promotion campaign
The process of empowering people to take charge of their own health and well-being is
known as health promotion. It focuses on a wide range of social and environmental
interventions, rather than just an individual's behaviour. Individuals and the community
might benefit from health promotion if provisions and information are made available.
People are more likely to take action to improve their health and wellbeing if they have
control over circumstances that may have an influence on their health. Change4life is an
example of a public health campaign aimed at reducing obesity. It gives people advice on
how to live a better lifestyle. Those who are at risk of health problems due to lifestyle
factors might benefit from health promotion.
Health protection focuses on limiting the spread of communicable disease/infection by
enforcing rules to guarantee that standards are maintained in order to safeguard the
public's health. A few government health-standards agencies, such as the Environmental
Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Department of Health
and Human Services, also help to keep illness transmission to a minimum. For example, the
FDA works to ensure that foods are not contaminated and cannot cause illness that can
harm people's health. WHO, national, regional, and local governments, as well as local
authorities, all strive toward the same goal: improving the health of individuals and
populations. They may collaborate with others to achieve the goal they have set for
themselves. They also strive to eliminate barriers in health care
An example of a health promotion campaign would be national walking month the purpose
of this campaign is to encourage individuals to stay active and live a healthier life therefore
promoting public health. this campaign have increased awareness of the importance of
walking has on your physical and mental health including the reduction of many preventable
health conditions including certain cancers, depression, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It
also promotes the environmental benefits of walking as it helps to reduce air pollution,
congestion and road danger.
P6: Explain how approaches to prevention and control have been applied in a selected
campaign
Change4life's mission to prevent and regulate public health uses a variety of approaches. It
accomplishes this in two ways. One is by coordinating services. Change4life promotes
healthy eating by collaborating with a variety of organisations, venues, and services to
spread its message to a wider audience in the aim of reducing the number of people with
obesity. Dentists, schools, and consumers will all benefit from change4life since they will be
aware of and able to recommend healthier alternatives. With these two organisations
collaborating, a larger audience will be able to see change4life. Children will also remember

, the symbols, the font, and the block colours, and will be more attentive of choosing healthy
choices.
Dieticians promote healthy eating habits by providing recipes, books, and meal suggestions.
Families, for example, have access to a variety of nutritious and simple dishes. Since the
dietician might print and distribute these, it helps to spread the change4life message. These
can be used as references by parents of children from dieticians to encourage a healthy
lifestyle in their children from a young age. This promotes the value of health because it
incorporates a healthy diet and lifestyle into society's standards, and as a child grows up
with these beneficial changes, they are likely to maintain them. According to NHS figures,
13,466 families signed up for change4life in its first year, with 5,000 of them being
dieticians.
P7: Explain how models or theories that justify behaviour change can be used to
overcome barriers in relation to a selected health promotion campaign
The health belief model can help guide health promotion and illness prevention strategies. It is used
to explain and predict individual willingness to alter their behaviour. In an attempt to reduce
childhood obesity rates, Change4life links to the health belief model by changing the behaviour of
families. Change4life aims to improve health by changing behaviour such as introducing healthy
meals and more exercise. This campaign promotes adverts that show how healthy eating and
exercise can reduce rates of childhood obesity. However, this campaign says if families continue
these behaviours, more people will become obese and develop diabetes.

The theory of reasoned action was developed in the 1970s, relating it to behaviour and situations
that influence it. According to this view, a person's purpose to behave determines his or her health
behaviour. Peer pressure, such as teenage smoking, is a subjective norm. Young people's smoking
habits are formed by their attitude towards their behaviour and their intentions. Norms and
attitudes that determine behaviours are examined in this theory. For instance, attitudes can affect
behaviour choices. This can link to change4life as they aim to change the attitudes of parents when
feeding their children meals and promote more exercise. Parents, on the other hand, are more likely
to keep their attitudes and it will be more difficult to change their behaviour. Change4life tries to
influence and improve these behaviours to improve the rates of obesity.

The theory of planned behaviour was developed in the 1980s and linked to reasoned action theory.
This theory is used to predict behaviours and intentions such as smoking or eating unhealthily.
Behavioural change theories are based on motivation and the ability to control or change behaviour.
Change4Life aims to influence the behaviour of parents and predict their behaviours. They aim to
improve behaviours to reduce the rates of obesity in children. By educating and giving advice on how
to improve eating and exercising, this can influence change of behaviours.

P8: Explain the features of a selected health promotion campaign and the approaches
used to increase public awareness
Charity-led health promotion campaigns, such as Cancer Research UK, are organised in the
same way as government-led programmes, such as Change4Life, are. These campaigns are
distributed to the general public via websites, leaflets, and other means to enlighten people
on how to improve their own health and make good lifestyle choices. Government bodies
are in charge of developing health policies that take into account current trends in health
