1.2 What is the sociology of education? (3)
Sociology of education is the study of educational structures,' processes and
practices from a sociological perspective. It is a core field within the discipline of
sociology.
1.3 Explain what is meant by the following terms: and give one example of
each.
a) Bourgeoisie - are the capitalist class who own the resources, land and tools;
they exploit the proletariat by paying them less than their work is worth.
b) The proletariat - the proletariat are the working class who do not own the
resources, land or tools they use to produce goods for the bourgeoisie.
1.4 One of the functions of sociology of education is the assimilation and
the transmission of
culture, where eby learners are taught to respect others (see p5 in SoE).
Briefly discuss how this
aim could be taught in the classroom. (3)
The aim can be taught in the classroom by activity-based learning in which students
will learn through direct participation in related activities such as community
programs and awareness campaigns. The school can organize specific programs
such as cleaning programs, essential in keeping the community clean. The class
sessions may include campaigns on road safety and climate change, improving
their knowledge within the classroom level. Teachers can also educate students on
social science lessons to educate them on the correct standards. This will allow
students to share perspectives on public views on social issues, which will fulfill new
social patterns.
