Industrial revolution (1870-1914) In the 19th century there was a time
when many important inventions were made.
Many of these inventions made work easier. As
these inventions created new manufacturing and
industry, many people moved away from farms
into the cities.
It was a time of very rapid change in the world.
Major inventors 1. Alexander Graham Bell the
telephone/communications
2. Thomas Edison the light bulb/electrical
appliances
3. Henry Ford the first mass produces car
(ford model T)/ transportation
tycoons With the industrial revolution and the
concentration of people in cities, there were new
business opportunities. Tycoons were people who
took advantage of these opportunities and thus
became very wealthy and powerful.
WW I The US was reluctant to join WW I
After running on the campaign “he kept us out of
the war”, president Woodrow Wilson decides to
bring the US into WW I in April 1917
There was a number of reasons for this, including
the continuing sinking of the US ships by German
Submarines and Mexico to retake the land that
Mexico lost to the US in the Mexican-American
War.
By entering WW I, they helped tip the balance of
the war in the allied’s favour
Roaring 20s A nickname for the 1920s in the US. It was a time
of hope, prosperity, and cultural change. With the
economy and the stock market booming, people
were spending money in entertainment and
consumer goods.
Advances in industry (electricity, communication,
and transportation) allowed the average person to
buy goods such as automobiles for the first time.
Women were newly empowered by gaining the
right to vote in 1919
Everything seemed like it was going great, and
people thought it would never end
