, 1.1.1 Communicative language approach is an approach to teach foreign or second
language which emphasize on communicative competence. It also emphasize on
interactive as a means to teach language. Communicative language teaching aim to
make learners attain communicative competence so the learners can use language
accurately and appropriately. The major focus using communicative language is on the
learners. The teacher is just like the facilitator. The teacher is a person who manages
the environment and helps the learners to become anonymous.
In communicative language accuracy is given prime importance. The main focus of the
approach is to make the learners able to understand the intention and expression of the
writers and speakers. In this approach it is believed that communicative function is more
important rather than linguistic structure. Each language has a limited number of
sentence patterns. The learner needs to understand the communicative functions of
those structures. When using communicative language approach in teaching language,
the target language is used in the classroom. The target language is a vehicle
classroom communication not just the object of study. Appropriate use of language is
emphasized rather than accuracy. Accuracy comes at later stage. It is believed that
when learner learns the language appropriately accuracy comes automatically.
Language is taught by integrating all language skills and not by only one skill. It means
communication approach is not limited to only speaking skills,’ reading and writing skills
should be developed. Language is learnt through social interaction. Communicative
language teaching approach provides the opportunities to communicate in the target
language to the learners. It encourages student – teacher and student – student
interaction. It helps to encourage the cooperative relationships among students. The
teacher gives the opportunity to share information among them. It also helps to build
communication amongst them. Communicative language teaching approach provides
the opportunity to the learners not only about what to say but also about how to say.
The teacher teaches students on how language should be used in a social context. The
teacher also gives activities such as role play which help the learners to learn language
in social context. Language teaching should be designed in such a way that it
encourages the learners to use the target language. Functional aspect of the language
should be given importance. Dramas, role play, games should be used in the classroom
to promote the real communication.

responsibilities of the teachers to create such situation in which communication takes
place among students. Teachers monitor the learning process. When using
communicative language teaching approach in the class teachers do not interrupt
during the learning process to correct the errors of the learner. They just note the errors
and correct them at a later point. The teachers give activities such that they accelerate
the learning and communication process. The teachers are also active participants of
the learning process. The main focus of the communicative language approach is on
communication process rather than mastering linguistic structure. This leads to different
