Unit 21
Assignment 2 Radiation
Regulations
Risks of radiation
State 3 legislations that are designed to inform hospitals and medical
providers how they must keep patients and staff safe from radiation.

Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 (IRR17)

HSE enforces a number of legal requirements related to ionizing radiation, including the 2017
Radiation Regulations (IRR17). The 2001 Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public
Information) Regulations (REPPIR) are also relevant. As per IRR17, employers must keep
exposures to ionising radiation at a minimum. Exposures must not exceed specified dose limits.
The limits should be achieved first through engineering controls and design features. If this is
not reasonably possible, employers should implement safe systems of work and rely on
personal protective equipment only as a last resort.

Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2018 (IR(ME)R)

In the regulations, it is aimed at ensuring that it is used safely to protect patients from the risk
of harm when exposed to ionising radiation. Radiation regulations set out the responsibilities of
duty holders (employer - the NHS, referrer - the doctor, IR (ME)R practitioner, and operator -
the radiographer) for radiation protection, as well as the basic safety standards that duty
holders must meet. The role includes minimizing unintended, excessive or incorrect medical

, exposures, justifying each exposure to ensure the benefits outweigh the risks, and optimizing
diagnostic doses to keep them "as low as reasonably practicable" for their intended use.

Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations 2019 (REPPIR)

Preparing for radiation emergencies is the focus of REPPIR 2019. As part of the Regulations,
preparedness initiatives are established to ensure that arrangements have been made for
responding to the emergency situation both on site and off site where the public might be
affected. In accordance with the regulations, the public is provided with information both
before and during a radiation emergency, so they are fully prepared and aware.

State and explain the role of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in
controlling radiation.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the government agency that is responsible for
overseeing work that might expose workers, the public, or both, to radiation. Occupational
radiation exposure is effectively controlled by inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive
(HSE). In a flexible and reasonable manner, they advise, inspect, investigate, and enforce. HSE's
role is crucial because it limits the amount of radiation that can escape and cause potential
harm to both the general public and workers while at the same time controlling radiation
exposure for workers.

Describe different health and safety measures used by hospitals to
maximise protection of hospital staff and patients. Include specific
measures for at least 4 different technologies.
