Introduction Case Study

There is a case study presented where a 26-year-old white female was experiencing

shortness of breath (SOB) & low energy. It was reported by the patient, Ms. A,that these

symptoms would worsen during her menses. Ms. A became light-headed when she was in a golf

Red blood cell smear (RBC) showed microcytic & hypochromic cells

Reticulocyte count = 1.5%

Other laboratory values were within normal limits” (Case Study, 2013).

These results show that Ms. A has a decreased amount of RBCs. Due to these results it is

revealed that Ms. A is anemic. “Anemia is a broad term used to indicate that there is a decreased

oxygen-carrying capability of the blood. The lack of RBCs may be the result of an abnormally
