The importance of psychological measurement

Meten is niet moeilijk. In de sociale wetenschappen is meten moeilijk –> je kan het niet zien.
Depressie, welzijn, e.d. We rekenen met getallen die ergens voor staan. Het gaat over constructen.
We hebben theorieën hoe de constructen samenhangen. We kijken naar het gedrag van mensen. Het
gedrag is een uiting van het hebben van een construct, zoals het thuisfront = opernationeel definite.

, Het kunnen ook attitudes of denkpatronen zijn. We willen dat zo’n test een goede weergave is van
het psychologische construct dat je wil meten.
Psychological tests: definition and types
“A psychological test is a systematic procedure for comparing behaviour of two or more
people.” Cronbach (1960)
- Behavioural sample (all kinds of behaviour): Gedrag is niet alleen wat we zien: antwoorden
op een vragenlijst.
Collected in a systematic way (standardized conditions): een vragenlijst afnemen
over depressive dat je dat niet doet in een kamer met positieve en negatieve muziek
situatie moet gelijk zijn.
Comparing behaviour (intra- or inter- individual differences). Tussen of binnen

Speeded (zo snel mogelijk) vs power (of je het daadwerkelijk goed hebt)

Psychometrics
Psychometrics is the science concerned with evaluating the attributes of psychological tests .
Type of information
Reliability = betrouwbaarheid = als ik iets meet, krijg ik dan iedere keer dezelfde
uitslag? Voorbeeld: lengte meten elke dag een persoon je verwacht iedere keer
dezelfde uitslag. Een meetlint is betrouwbaar.
Als het meetlint elastisch is heb je elke keer een ander resultaat. Afzonderlijke
metingen zijn anders niet betrouwbaar. Een andere uitslag, terwijl je lengte niet is
veranderd.
Validity = validiteit = Meet het instrument wel je echte lengte? Bijvoorbeeld als het
meetlint de onderste 5cm mist je meet wel iedere keer hetzelfde, maar je schat
iemand hierdoor steeds te lang in. Je meet niet iemands echte lengte.
Variability of human characteristics instead of general laws of mental phenomena.
Differential psychology (verschillen tussen personen): study of individual differences
(individuele verschillen). Dus in beide.
