P1

Equality is “the right of different groups of people to have similar social position and receive
the same treatment regardless of their race, background, religiose beliefs and gender.”
Equality is important in health and social care because it would mean that every service use
is treated the same and is given the same treatment as anyone else and this means that the
service users feel comfortable in a health and social care setting.

Diversity means “understanding that each individual is unique and recognizing our individual
differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual
orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs,
or other ideologies.” Diversity is important in health and social care as it means that all the
service users are treated the same and have access to the same things.

Direct discrimination is when you’re treated differently and worse than someone else for
certain reasons like your age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership,
pregnancy, race, religion, set and sexual orientation according to citizens advise.

Indirect discrimination can happen when there are rules or arrangements that apply to a
group of employees or job applicants, but in practice are less fair to a certain protected
characteristic.

Effects of discrimination

Discrimination can happen to anyone and anywhere for example in the community centre
one of the service users could be discriminated against by one of the workers for their
religious beliefs with direct discrimination. This will affect the service user as they might not
feel safe in the community centre anymore as they are being discriminated against so they
won’t come back to the community centre and as some of the service users are referred by
social services, they could have different problems going on and this might affect their
mental health.

Another example of discrimination is that one of the workers in the community centre could
be discriminated against by another worker because of their ethnicity, this could be in the
form of the other worker which could be someone higher up discriminating against them.
This will have an effect on the worker as they won’t feel comfortable at their work which
can affect the quality of their work and they won’t like where they work and would feel
uncomfortable.

,Importance of preventing discrimination

It’s important to prevent discrimination as it a law in the UK called the human rights act
1998 and the equality act 2010. For example, if a service user is discriminated against in the
community centre for their religious beliefs, they could be vulnerable as they might be
referred to the community centre from social services which could mean they have different
problems and if they are discriminated against in a place that they should feel safe they
might develop other problems and mental health issues.

Importance of promoting equality and diversity

Patrick Green
It is important to promote equality and diversity for Patrick as he is concerned that if he is
HIV positive, he won’t be welcomed at the martial arts club which would go against the
equality act 2010 but he was reassured by Jeff that he would still be welcome at the martial
arts centre even if he is HIV positive and will be treated equally regardless of his condition.
Patrick and James where also concern that they didn’t want their landlord to find out about
their condition and their GP has assured them that he won’t find out as its confidential
between them and their GP. Promoting their equality is important as they should not be
treated different because of their condition.

Brenda Grey
It is important to promote equality and diversity for Brenda as she has different conditions
and different needs for her care. As she has many conditions, she will have a person-centred
approach for her care with different people involved like herself, a health visitor, a
community psychiatrist nurse, a specialist nurse practitioner who is an asthma specialist, the
GP, the manager of the sheltered accommodation, an advocate and a named person at the
community centre who will take responsibility for safeguarding Brenda. She was concerned
that there were too many people involved in her care but was assured that they would be
on a need-to-know basis and that sensitive information would be retained securely. It would
be important for the asthma specialist to promote equality as if she doesn’t, she might not
give the right instructions to Brenda which can risk her life as she won’t know how to use it
properly.

Martin Smithers
It is important for equality and diversity to be promoted for Martin as he is some people
involved in his situation that are trying to help him and find a job for him. As he has a
chronic skin condition, he should feel that that is not getting in the way of him finding a job
and that he is treated equally and given the same opportunities. As his skin condition is
worsening, he is not able to participate in the carpentry classes, so he has been suggested to
go to a reding club, but he is concerned that as he is not a competent reader he might feel
left out but the leader of the reading club has promoted his equality and diversity as he has
different abilities so he has assured him that he won’t be left out and can pick a easy reading
text book to help him.

2

, Conclusion

In conclusion promoting diversity and equality is important as people will have different
need and different abilities so they should not be treated different and still be respected
regardless of their ability. Not promoting equality and diversity could lead to a lot of
negative impact on the service users or the workers.
