Molecules
, 1.1 Introduction to
Biological Molecules
,Bonding
• Sharing of electron pairs between atoms.
• Covalent bonds • Forms a strong covalent bond with weak intermolecular forces.
• Transfer of electrons.
• Ionic bonds • Negative ions and positive ions attract (like charges)
• Weak bond but strong intermolecular charge.
• Uneven distribution of an electron pair in a covalent bond.
• Hydrogen bonds • Creates a polar material
• One atom is more positive and one is more negative
, Hydrogen bonding
• The O is more negative than the H as
electron pair is close to O
• This makes it 𝛿- and the H 𝛿+.
• Due to the charged atoms, the H from
other molecules is attracted to the O by a
hydrogen bond.
