Definition: The muscular system is an organ system consisting of skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscles. Muscles, attached to bones or internal
organs and blood vessels, are responsible for movement. Nearly all movement in the body is the result of muscle contraction.
The primary function of striated muscles is to generate force and contract in order to support respiration, locomotion, and posture (skeletal
muscle) and to pump blood throughout the body (cardiac muscle).
MD is caused by mutations (alterations) in the genes responsible for healthy muscle structure and
function. It usually develops after inheriting a faulty gene from one or both parents and it runs in the family.
Symptoms: Frequent falls, difficulty rising from a lying or sitting position, trouble running and jumping, muscle pain and stiffness, walking on
the toes and Large calf muscles.
Treatment: occupational therapy, corrective surgery, physical therapy
