Assignment 2 – Designing and prototyping an IoT system


Introduction
I am an IT consultant for the environment agency and will be designing and prototyping a new
IoT system which will be used to monitor atmospheric conditions in specific locations around
London. This IoT system will monitor the effectiveness of the new Ultra Low Emission Zone
which will then be used to reduce pollution.
In my report I will be stating each stage that I have went through to design and make a
prototype of this IoT system. There will be a total of 5 stages which I will be showing in my
report which are:
1. Design
2. Implementation
3. Review
4. Optimization
5. Evaluation
For these stages to be complete I will need to make sure that my prototype meets the client
requirements which I have been given.
The client requirements are to make a system that contains three stations and that each station
should contain sensors that will detect environmental conditions. The sensors that are being
used are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and temperature sensors which will need to be
connected to a network infrastructure.
Also, I will need to make sure that the sensors transmit their data via the network registration
server which then the data will be recorded and analyzed. In my IoT system the server will be in
the Environmental Agency central office and if any of the CO2 levels at any site exceed a
threshold of 500 an alarm that is correspondent to each site will activate. I will need to connect
the sensors wirelessly to the locations so if the threshold does exceed the sensors will tell the
sirens to go off and the system will need to provide an internet connection to allow for remote
monitoring and control.

,Stage 1 - Design
In this stage I will be making the designs of the system I will then create in Cisco packet tracer.
My designs will consist of 2 different design diagrams which are a network diagram which will
show how the system will look like with all the network devices and a flowchart which will show
how the system will work.

As you can see in my network diagram I have the 3 sites and the central office which is needed
in the system.

Each site includes a switch, server, a wireless access point that wirelessly connects carbon
dioxide detector, carbon monoxide detector and a temperature monitor. This is so that when
the threshold of CO2 goes over 500 in each site the WAP (Wireless Access Point) will send a
signal to the switch which will then send a signal to the central office switch and will trigger the
siren to go off.

The network diagram has fibre optic cables instead of an ethernet connecting to all the
switches. This is because fibre optic cables are much faster and are better when connecting
devices from a distance to the same network.

, Flowchart




In my flowchart it shows what happens when the CO2 levels reach above 500.
As you can see in the flowchart if the CO2 levels are kept under control and remain under 500
then the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide will remain on, and the siren will not go off. You
can see this in the flowchart as the arrows go from the start to the CO2 decision which then
connects to process of which the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide detectors turn on and
after that the process ends and then repeats till the threshold of 500 is reached.
If the threshold of 500 is reached, then as shown in the flowchart the siren will turn on from
that specific site and then and the siren will keep going off till the carbon dioxide and carbon
monoxide detectors are off. The flowchart shows this by the arrows which show the process of
if the CO2 reach 500 or over. Also, after the siren, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide
detectors are turned off they will be turned off till the CO2 levels fall under 500.
