Behavior and Communication
Week 6
Lecture 10a: Case II

TALPA
- Large multimedia organization
- Mission and vision: 100% Dutch network of strong media-brands aiming to reach at
least 90% of the Dutch population on a weekly basis
- Telling Dutch stories to the Dutch people

Departments:
- Talpa TV
- Talpa Media Solutions (radio)
- Talpa social (influencers)
- Talpa entertainment production (shows)

Chain of events/hints on culture
- Multiple police reports field against Talpa employees’ regarding sexual transgressive
behavior
- “BOOS” emission about sexual transgressive behavior and power abuse by Talpa
employees currently working at or having worked The Voice Holland

The problem:
Talpa is very eager to change its inner culture for the better! They are looking for consultancy
bureau to give them advice on what to do and what to change to make sure their org culture
transforms into a healthy one (and hopefully to improve their reputation)

1. Talpa wants our help to prevent the occurrence of transgressive behavior in their
organization
2. Talpa wants your help specifically to prevent power abuse/abusive supervision
3. Talpa wants to improve employees’ sense of phycological safety

Tips and reminders:
- Do not address sexual transgressive behaviors in your presentation

, - Focus on interventions instead on the problem as stated earlier
- John de Mol will likely read your proposed intervention. Keep this in mind when
writing or presenting about how and when you implicate your proposed interventions

Lecture 10b: About article: A Trickle-down model of abusive supervision

Two theories that describe how we learn appropriate social behavior:
1. Social Learning Theory
 Basic conditions for learning:
 Attention & retention
 Role-models (visibility, powerful, credible)

2. Social Information Processing Theory
Social behavior is learned by watching others:
 The social environment provides cues that we use to interpret events
 Cues shape our behavior through:
 Aim our focus on certain information
 Provide expectations regarding behavior
 Create pressure to conform to group-norms

A trickle-down model of abusive supervisor:
Leadership behavior may trickle down to another level:
- Positive behaviors:
 Charismatic leadership
 Perceived support
 Behavioral integrity

- Negative behaviors:
 Injustice
 Violation of psychological contracts

- Abusive supervision: subordinates’ perceptions of the extent to which their
supervisors engage in the sustained display of hostile verbal and nonverbal behaviors,
excluding physical contact
