2.3 The school context

Name: Slindile Gumede

Where: Inanda ( seminary )

Type (urban well resourced, rural well resources, private well resourced, FET college, urban
less well resourced, rural less well resourced, private less well resourced):
Private well resourced

Explain your choice:
I chose the school because of its role playing in South African by producing audacious women.
The school is private and well resourced. I wanted to feel how it feels to be in the private school
and most respected school.

Fee paying or non-fee-paying? Fee paying
Number of learners: 385
Number of teachers: 38

Resource: Laboratory, store room, electricity, internet, smart board, computers, textbooks, media
centre or school library, data projectors and old fashioned overhead projectors.

Community in which the school is situated: The school is located in a township that is 24km
north west in Durban. The township is subdivided into smaller townships or villages, Inanda
Newtown A,B,C: Inanda Glebe, Amaoti and Emachobeni. The community of Inanda consists of
inadequately educated people who live below poverty.

Reflection: Why is the school context important? How would this influence your task as a
teacher? School context is important because it impacts how teaching and learning take place.
For instance if the school is not well resourced, it may be a barrier to learning if learners do not
have good resources.

evidence: Paste a photo of the school here:

TO BE FILLED IN BY THE STUDENT:

What are your expectations of the mentor?
I expect my mentor to provide assistance and support in classroom organisation and
management, instructional planning, delivery of effective instruction. As a student teacher I need
my mentor to help me in developing capacity in both content and instructional pedagogy.

What can the mentor expect from you?
To report daily for a full school day, to become involved in activities and collaborate with him that
comes out with assuming responsibilities designed by my mentor teacher, be punctual all the time.
Prepare my lesson which is to be approved by my mentor. Reflect after the lesson to check that
there is something I learnt during the lesson.

Reflection: How did the mentor(s) contribute to your practical teaching experience?
My mentor contributed a lot with my teaching experience. He guided me through the planning and
delivery of my lesson. He is always there for me, helping with content, teaching methods and the
classroom management.
