What differentiates the practice of a master's-prepared nurse compared to
that of a baccalaureate-prepared nurse?
One of the things that differentiates the practice of a master’s
prepared nurse from the practice of a baccalaureate prepared nurse is that
a master’s prepared nurse will have a “deeper understanding of nursing
and the related sciences” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing
[AACN], 2011). Nurses who further their education will have the benefits of
learning more in depth about things that might have been touched on
briefly in an AND or BSN program. Some of these things could include,
nursing theories, scope of practice and the use of evidence-based research
to guide their patient care. With the advances in technology and the easier
accessibility to medical journals and health-related websites, patients
nowadays are becoming more aware and educated about the diseases and
conditions that affect them and, also about treatments. This is where
evidence-based research plays an important role. As nurses, we need to be
able to provide patients with educated answers, and concrete reasons for
the treatment that we are providing for them, patients often know the
answers to their questions, but they want to make sure that the people
who are taking care of them are knowledgeable. This can become a
challenge for nurses who are not comfortable with evidence-research,
whether it is because they do not know where to look for it or them
themselves do not understand it. This can have a negative effect on their
nursing practice, it can cause them to not be able to form trusting
