D1 Evaluate the recruitment processes used and how they contribute to the success of
the selected business
Introduction
I am going to be investigating the recruitment process of BMW and how it contributes to the success
of the company. BMW are known to recruit through their own processes and are most likely to recruit
many young people as they can work longer and can be trained by BMW in order to further progress
in the company. One of the main advantages of BMW recruiting young people can be proven by the
recent news report which stated BMW increased productivity by 7% in one year, since they started
recruiting more young people.1
One of BMWs strengths are that BMW openly encourage everyone to apply for their jobs, this makes
it easier for people of different races, genders and sexual orientation. BMW clearly state on their
website that they would like more women to apply to their jobs and advertise all their vacancies on
their website making it easier for people to apply.
BMW advertise their jobs in a certain way. For example, in their job description they mention the
benefits. such as discounts on their vehicles, training programs to support new employees and a
flexible schedule in order to allow parents to work alongside their children's schedule. The effects
of this are that BMW want their employees to feel comfortable working and allow them to have many
benefits in order to fit their schedule and salary. 2
How effective is BMW at recruitment
The weaknesses of BMWs recruitment are that they have been known to falsely advertise in their
job description only to later not go through with it. 3 This causes a major issue for BMW as current
employees have stated the company took them on for apprentice work, which they never ended up
fully completing. This also creates backlash for BMW as it will decreases the number of applicants
they are receiving as applicants would not want to work for a company who don’t fill through will
commitments. A solution of this may include BMW re-evaluating their job adverts and whether or not
they are able to fill through with the promises they make, also BMW need to be comitted into
allocating a senior member of staff to train these apprentices and also to invest more into training
the staff until they are skilled and qualified enough to take on responsibilities of a particular job role
effectively. However, a downside of this is that it will increase the costs of the business as they will
spend more on recruiting apprentices and paying for their training.
Another weakness of BMWs recruitment method is when employing these apprentices or putting a lot
of these apprentice roles on, the business will then need to spend more money on paying these
apprentices university fees, their salary and their training. 4 These increases the cost of BMW to
enable to have skilled and qualified individuals to work for their company, however due to this the
business will be investing in their own staff. This allows the staff to be happier with BMW are
progressing with their career and will lead to a staff turnover with more employees being properly
qualified for particular roles. This will also eliminate the risk of BMW employing candidates who are
not as skilled or fitted to a certain job role.
