inform a culturally competent social worker. Claudia is hispanic, this is very important

information for a social worker to know and it can answer a lot of unanswered questions.

While Claudia was born in the United States her family still speaks Spanish as their

primary language. As we know not everyone in the U.S speaks spanish. Social workers

should be aware of this information especially if they do not speak spanish. The NASW

(2021) states that social workers should have an understanding of culture and its function

in human behavior and society, recognizing the strengths that exist in all cultures.

Furthermore, Claudia and her family are not wealthy. Social workers should be aware of

a client's financial situation because it can be a contributing factor to their current

situation. As a result of Claudia and her family not being as wealthy as others they have

to settle for living in a neighborhood where crime rates are high.



Describe culturally competent strategies you might use to assess the needs of children.

As social workers we will always find ourselves working with individuals who

have different backgrounds than us. Working with Claudia and her family may be a bit

difficult for me because I do not speak their language and I am from a different culture

than them. While working with this family I will gather as much information as possible

about them, and some of their cultural practices so that I can make sure that I assist in the

best way possible. Furthermore, some cultural strategies that I will utilize to assess the
