, How is data used in your educational setting? In your classroom?

Data is the foundation of my classroom and school system. An essential component of

education is for classroom decisions to be driven by data (Mandinach, & Gummer, 2016). Data is

used to enhance students learning and outcomes. Data is used in my classroom to modify

curriculum in a way that is supportive to learners. Student data also allows me to create my small

groups during centers. The academic coach uses classroom, grade-level, and school wide data to

assist with supplemental student support. We also look at student data to understand what was

taught well as well as to understand what needs improving and how can we improve those.

Student data is tracked and regularly checked by my schools’ administrative team.

Administration sits in on our Professional Learning Committees to discuss the student data with

each grade level. Evaluating student data allows me to reflect on my teaching practices

frequently.

How might you or your educational setting improve the use of data?

Student data is typically quizzes and summative assessments. While educators spend

quite a bit of time and effort tracking student data, all data and classwork falls seeming irrelevant

to the schools and county when the students do not do well on standardized tests. Markoff (2022)

states, “Grade point averages (GPA) are a 5 times stronger indicator of college success than

standardized tests, according to a study of 55,084 Chicago public school students” (para. 27).

Students’ daily classwork, activities, and assessments should have more of an impact. To

improve the use of data, student academic performances, formal, and informal assessment scores

should be taken into consideration when setting goals as well as additional planning.
