In Long-term Care
I selected electronic health records for the technology needing to be implemented in my
current facility. Electronic Health Records (E.H.R.s) are an electronic representation of a
patient's medical history that the provider retains over time and include administrative and
clinical data that applies to that person's care under a particular provider. This data will
include, not limited to, demographics, progress notes, problems, medications. (C.M.S., 2021)
I have worked in a skilled nursing environment that implemented E.H.R. helped with data
collection, organization, and quality of care. Presently, I work for an assisted living and memory
care community; I project that the benefits of using electronic health records will improve every
area of operations: from relationships with family members, resident satisfaction and
engagement, employee satisfaction and lower turnover, quality compliance, operational
efficiency, and overall cost.
Why Is This Transition Important?
Electronic health records' purpose is to create and display real-time, patient-centered
documents that instantly make information available to authorized users in a secured
environment. While an E.H.R. does contain patients' medical and treatment histories, E.H.R.
systems are built to go beyond borders and be accessible to all providers across all levels of care.
The display of clinical data collected in a provider's office can be accessed in the skilled nursing
database and extend a broader view of a patient's care needs. They grant access to evidence-
based tools that providers can use to make decisions about a patient's care. E.H.R. systems
automate and streamline provider workflow. (HealthIT.gov, 2019)
