, The Role of the Nurse Manager
The roles and responsibilities of a nurse manager can place a heavy burden on an
individual. The supervision of nursing staff and the decisions implemented can have an
everlasting effect on not only the staff but patients as well. Nurse Managers must have the
ability to multi-task, critically think, and overcome barriers by creating a safe and healthy work
environment that employees can flourish in and provide safe, efficient patient care.
Nursing Leadership Theory
Nursing leadership is deeply rooted and driven by past nursing theorist that have paved
the way for how patient care is delivered. The theory of leadership that would be helpful for
S.M. as she assumes a leadership role in a voluntary professional membership association
would be embracing the servant leadership theory. According to Leclerc et al. (2021), “Servant
leadership is one of the more commonly borrowed
theories or philosophies of leadership embraced within health care and nursing. Servant
leadership is defined as an understanding and practice of leadership that places the good of those
led over the self-interest of the leader. Servant leaders place the needs of others before their own
and embrace a fundamental motivation to serve”. Servant leaders possess the traits of
compassion, empathy, and commitment to their
employees. This trait can embrace all employees and addresses any situation from a
diplomatic approach. With the servant leadership approach, she can focus on the members of
the association and the tasks that are at hand. “The success of staff members translates into
the success of the organization and ultimately the success of the leader” (Roussel et al., 2020,
p. 193).
