Breastfeeding has been proven to be the most effective way to prevent many infant related
illnesses. World Health Organization recommended that children initiate breastfeeding within the
first hour of birth and be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life (WHO, 2021).
Evidence based research has shown that human breast milk has complete nutrition an infant.
Effective breastfeeding policies at the federal and state government levels will provides many
benefits to the new mothers and infants.

The Health People (HP 2020) has key information on public health policy that can arm public
health practitioners and health educators with evidence-based strategies that will enable them
educate policymakers on policies can help improve breastfeeding targets for new mothers.
Examples includes increasing the proportion of infants who are breastfed, helping employers
with resources to establish workstations for lactating new mothers (HP, 2020). This will help
safeguard the health of the new mother and infant. Stakeholders may include and not limited to
Government (Department of health and human services, Treasury and Education), Non-
government institutions such as: Healthcare systems and providers (insurance companies and
donors), Community groups, Employers and private sector, Political parties, United Nations and
World health Organization.
Supporting breastfeeding families through policy will maximize our public health resources and
improve new mother and infant well-being.
