Reflection of Group Experiences

Section I on reflections of your experience as a group participant.
As a group participant, I learned not to be afraid of taking the initiative and be willing to get help.

According to the text Groups: Process and Practice it stated: “ Courage demonstrates through the willingness to

be vulnerable at times, imperfections and taking the same risk you expect group members to take” (Corey,

Corey, pg. 31(2018). Courage helps open the dialogue that needs to be had in group situations. The group

participation helped me not avoid new problems and ask for help because a group member might have the same

questions. The cohort group helped me gain the courage not to be scared to use their knowledge and experiences

to help better my understanding as a counselor. Sometimes, I must not think I am bothering people by calling

them to plan, get work done, and stay on task.

Another experience that I value from the group experience is how genuine and caring we all were for

this proposal. Regarding Groups: Process and Practice, it stated: “ our main Job in the group is to help members

get what they are coming for, not to get in the way” (Corey, Corey, pg. 32 (2018). Guide the group members to

resolve the issue and not take the group personally. Genuine intentions can help the group be open and aware of

actions they need to change by guiding the group with respect and opening connections. Within the group

cohort, we made genuine connections that helped find different ideas to help the population step outside the box

and step outside ourselves as counselors

, Section II on your reflections of your experience as a group leader

My experience as a group leader was challenging because having to facilitate a group through

theravue. The challenging part of facilitating is encouraging open expression and involving all group members.

According to the text Groups: Process and practice, "Essentially, these skills involve opening up clear

communication among the members and helping them increase their responsibility for the direction of their

group" (Corey, Corey, pg. 40 (2018). Facilitating skill is guiding the group to enhance accountability to control

, the group's conversation. Theravue helped me see that I need to be present and have active listening skills to

understand when to interject and the proper way to facilitate with more than one person.

Another skill that needs growth and development is linking in regard to the reading Groups: Process and

practice, "This skill calls on the insightfulness of the leader in finding ways of relating what one person is doing

or saying to the concerns of another person" (Corey, Corey, pg. 42 (2018). The group leader relates issues to

help group members not feel alone. Linking was challenging because I kept focusing on one person and not

mending the group to participate in the conversation. Linking the group members would have made theravue

easier because they all had similar issues to speak and encourage each other. As I continued with theravue, I

realized that I had also had to remember the client's names and take time to be present because I was trying to

remember how previous classes gave insight. But this class was different because it was more than one person

sitting with similar issues.
